Today’s PBJ reading is:

Genesis 3:1-4:26 Matthew 2:13-3:6 Psalm 2:1-12 Proverbs 1:7-9

In Genesis, we read about first sin. The first hiding from God, first ‘passing of the buck,’ and the first wimp moment. This passage contains man’s first theological statement which was to cover sin with fig leaves. God’s response was to pay for that sin with sacrifice and cover Adam and Eve with animal skins.

Yet, the ultimate theological response to sin would be God providing himself as the ultimate sacrifice for sin.

There is a fascinating correlation between the passage in Genesis and the passage in Matthew. Adam, the first man, was covered in Animal skins. John the Baptist, the last prophet of the old covenant wore animal skins. After John the Baptist, the blood of Jesus covers our sins. In other words, the symbolism of Animal skins covering sins was from Adam to John the Baptist. After Jesus went to the cross, animal skins were just an article of clothing.

Psalm 2 is fascinating in that from creation to the second coming, the Nations rage and God laughs at their foolishness and arrogance. In that ongoing mess from the beginning to now, the passage in Proverbs proclaims firm truth – Fear of the Lord is the beginning of Wisdom.
