This is a “come as you need help” class.  I will be available through out the LAMS day to give help as needed on an individual basis.  Please bring your curriculum and questions and I will help each student step by step to better understand Math concepts.  (No Trig or calculus)

No Tuition:  Minimal Donations are accepted to pay teacher for her time.

Private Piano Lessons                      Ages 5-18

Time:  8:30-3:00 (half hour lessons)

Private individual lessons consisting of one half hour per week that LAMS is in session. Students are required to have a piano or keyboard at home for practicing. A piano is preferred but a keyboard can be used at the elementary level providing it has 88 keys which are the same size of a piano key.  Each student will be required to practice at home according to age and level.  The curriculum used is the Keith Snell method series.  The Faber method may also be used as a supplement depending on the needs of the student. The Keith Snell method encompasses all four classical music periods: Baroque, Classical, Romantic and 20th Century.  Beginners will use John Thompson’s Easiest Piano Course Part One and Part Two, and the John Schaum Note speller.  The lessons will include theory, ear training, sight reading and artistry at the piano.  An assessment of each student is required for course participation. There will be a sign-up for the assessment at registration. An Assessment of each student who is NOT a beginner is required.   Parents will be responsible for obtaining the books at the music store.( Grainer music on Barnes Ave. usually has them in stock or can get the books ordered. Three to five books will be required and they are about $5.00 a piece.)

More Private Piano Lessons                            Ages 5-18

Half hour lessons will we offered all day on Fridays at LAMS.  Students will be taught note reading, timing theory, technique, chords, scales, ear training, getting a command of the keyboard and how to make music! Beginner students will need to practice 15 minutes EVERY DAY.  Third grade and up will practice 30 mins.

There will be a sign up sheet at Nancy Sue’s table on registration day for assessment appointments. REQUIREMENTS; Piano or 88 key keyboard at home to practice and appropriate books which will be assigned by teacher on day of assessment.

Beginning students starting on a band instrument will need to obtain an instrument.
These can be rented from Graner Music or Meeker Music.  They will also need to purchase The Standard of Excellence Band Method book 1 for their instrument.

Lessons for students who have had experience playing their instrument will also be available. I would need to asses their knowledge and ability to decide what lessons or method book or books would be appropriate for them. 

Materials Fee: none.  The parents will be responsible for acquiring their child's instrument and book/books.

You don’t have to be artistic to make a beautiful cake.  By learning how to use different shaped tips and techniques, you’ll soon be able to decorate cakes for all kinds of occasions. We will cover a variety of cakes, from shaped cakes to cut-up cakes.  You will be able to create your own cakes at home in a new and creative way.  Everyone will need to buy a decorating bag with basic set of tips and a rose nail, as well as bringing a cookie sheet to practice on.  No homework, but everyone will be expected to bring a decorated cake for EXPO!

Course requirements; Must have a digital camera, spare batteries and camera manual.  Access to the internet and the ability to name, resize and send digital photos by email (or willingness to learn)

Civics/Government 101                               Ages HS

“Civics is the study of citizenship and government with particular attention given to the role of citizens-as opposed to external factors- in the operation and oversight of government.” (Wikipedia)  The Declaration of Independence, the US Constitution, The Bill of Rights, the organization of the US government, and the role of citizens in the processes of government with emphasis on the contribution of Christianity will be studied.  Students should expect 20-40 pages of reading per class.  The students will be graded on a 3 page paper due the second to last week of class.  Please purchase the text and read Ch 1 before the first class. The text, American Government (paperback) by Robert a Heineman, Steven a Peterson and Thomas H Rasmussen, is available from Amazon.com for about $10 in the used editions.  There are plenty available.

Zoology 2, Exploring Creation with Swimming Creatures of the 5th day                ages 8-12(must be able able to read well)

The second book in Apologia’s elementary zoology series (no prerequisites) will take you and your family on a journey into the wonders of this day.  You’ll begin with a big splash from the whales and dolphins; then you’ll spy on seals and meet manatees.  After that, you’ll uncover the world of crabby crustaceans, sea snails, and clams.  Then you’ll meet their soft-bodies friends like the octopus, squid, and nautilus.  You’ll consort with corals, find flowers that devour plankton, see stars that walk, discover dollars that disappear in the sand, and see sponges that really do clean!

As always, each lesson ends with an experiment or project reinforcing the scientific method and the concepts studied.

Take your love for photography and add excellence and beauty to your skills.  Intermediate students learn complete camera skills such as exposure, digital editing and portrait lighting.  Advanced students greatly strengthen the power and impact of their images using research and photography projects. 

Equipment suggestions:

INTERMEDIATE; Any digital camera and editing software including the free Faststone Viewer. 

ADVANCED; any camera, however students will benefit more if using a camera with manual exposure controls such as the inexpensive but awesome “CanonA590 IS ($150).  Photoshop Elements is helpful but not required.

We will explore the lives and God-given talent of major artists throughout history.  Every week we will work on replicating a variety of techniques used by the masters.  Students will be asked to draw and do periodic reports at home to receive credit.

Exploring Creation with Biology (Lab Only-2nd Semester)      HS

In this course, we will do labs that correspond with the Apologia Biology course material, only. (LAB course with dissection)  This is the 2nd Semester of this course.  So we will begin in Module 8 & 9 the first week.  As this class is only 50 minutes I will assume the parents will be administering the Module tests at home on their own.  I will also assume the students will be self learners by reading the modules as I assign them as well as the on your own questions.  We will do as many labs in class as time allows.  As a science teacher, I will expect students to accurately complete their lab write ups as well as turn them into me. Yes, I will give the students an example of what I expect. The first day of class the parents can expect their student to receive a print out of the weekly lessons/ and due dates.  I look forward to exploring God's Creation through Biology with your student!
