What is LAMS?
Learning Adventures at Mountain Springs (LAMS) is a ministry of Mountain Springs Church (located just east of the Black Forest and Woodmen Road intersection, at 7345 E. Woodmen Road, Colorado Springs, CO 80908) and is designed to support the home school families of our community. These enrichment classes are open to all students whether they are members of Mountain Springs Church or not. Our goal is to provide opportunities for student enrichment in the areas of art, music, science, physical education, and other subjects that may help round out the home school experience.
How is LAMS organized?
LAMS is organized as a parent/child participation program. Please plan to stay in the building during the time your child(ren) are at LAMS and enjoy the fellowship with other parents! If you do need to leave for an important reason, please ask a friend to be responsible for your child(ren) and find a substitute to fill your assigned job. You will need to sign out at the front desk. Because LAMS is a co-op, a parent is required to work one hour every week for each hour that they have a child(ren) in class. The registration process includes signing up for these co-op jobs. Every effort will be made to give you your preference of time and position, but co-op jobs are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis. Your flexibility in this area is appreciated. Please be faithful in fulfilling the job(s) you have agreed to do. It lightens the load for everyone and helps us leave the building in a better condition than when we arrived. You may choose to take advantage of Little LAMS childcare (4 years and younger) or the Homework/Game Room (ages 6 to 12) for children not enrolled in a class during the hour(s) you are fulfilling your LAMS volunteer position.
Does LAMS run background checks?
For the safety of our children, MSC performs a background check on each participating adult. The registration packet includes a Servant Ministry Application. Simply fill out the section entitled “Personal Information”, read the authorization at the end , and sign. Please note that this form, with your social security number, driver license number and signature, is required for participation in LAMS. This information will only be used by MSC, and will be kept in a secure location.
How much do classes cost?
Each one-hour class is $30 per semester, and each two-hour class is $60 per semester. A materials fee may also be charged upon the teacher’s request, payable at registration. Please be prepared to pay in cash or to write two separate checks to MSC; one for class fees and one for material fees. Private Piano Lessons are $72 per Semester (half hour lesson each Friday).
Are scholarships available?
There are a limited number of scholarships available each semester. Scholarship applications are available from Marian (LAMS Director) at
mmgracier @ yahoo.com and must be received by Marian on or before 25 July 2008. We are unable to consider any applications received after this date. What if I have questions about a class?
Class descriptions and fees are included in the registration packet. If you have further questions about a class, please contact the teacher prior to registration using the contact information provided with the class description.
What if I would like to add or drop classes after registration?
Registered families may add or drop classes through the second week of classes (Friday, 19 September 2008). If a class is dropped, a refund will be issued or another class may be selected. All class material fees are nonrefundable. There are no pro-rated refunds for individual classes that are cancelled for reasons beyond our control. LAMS will make every effort to make up any cancelled dates according to the make-up schedule.
What about lunch?
We will have a lunch period from 12:00 to 12:30. All proceeds made from the snack table will benefit the scholarship fund. Everyone is responsible for their own lunches although LAMS may periodically organize a sign-up for pizza or sub sandwiches. There will be snacks available.
Is there some sort of program at the end of the semester?
Teachers may choose to have their classes participate in a short program showcasing the semester’s accomplishments during a lunchtime EXPO on Friday, 21 November 2008. Please put this date for this EXPO on your calendar now!
